Split Application
Applying a pre-emergent herbicide in two half-rate applications spaced 4–8 weeks apart instead of one full-rate application. Split applications provide better season-long protection and are especially useful in warm climates where crabgrass germinates over a longer window.
A single application of pre-emergent begins breaking down as soon as it is applied. In warm climates, where soil temperatures reach 55°F early and stay there through summer, a single application may wear off before crabgrass germination ends.
Split application strategy: Apply half the recommended rate in early spring (at 50–53°F soil temp) and the other half 6–8 weeks later. This extends the protection window while keeping total chemical load the same.
Prodiamine is especially well-suited to split application due to its long residual activity.
