Slow-Release Fertilizer
Fertilizer that releases nutrients gradually over 6–12 weeks. Slow-release products provide consistent feeding, reduce the risk of burning, and require fewer applications per season. They typically cost more but are safer and more forgiving.
Slow-release fertilizers use coated or organic nitrogen sources that break down gradually: polymer-coated urea (PCU), sulfur-coated urea (SCU), or natural organics like IBDU or methylene urea. They release nutrients based on soil temperature and moisture.
Benefits: Consistent feeding without growth surges. Much lower burn risk. Can be applied in warmer conditions than quick-release. Environmentally better — less nitrogen leaches into groundwater.
Look for: Products labeled "extended release," "controlled release," or showing percentages of "WIN" (water-insoluble nitrogen) on the label.
