Spreader Calibration
The process of setting your spreader to deliver the correct amount of product per 1,000 square feet. Every spreader has a numbered dial that controls the size of the opening. Product bags list recommended settings for popular spreader brands — always start with the bag's recommendation.
Spreader settings vary between brands and models — a "6" on one spreader applies a very different rate than a "6" on another. The product label lists settings for common spreader brands (Scotts, Earthway, Agri-Fab, etc.).
If your spreader brand isn't listed:
- Find a spreader brand listed that is similar in size/style to yours.
- Start with a conservative (lower) setting.
- Spread product over a measured area and weigh what you used.
- Compare to the target rate on the bag and adjust.
General rule: When in doubt, use a lower setting. You can always apply more. Over-application causes burn, waste, and potential water quality issues.
